A US company called Dot Irish LLC has recently signed a contract to run an .irish domain name registry. As stated on their site dotirish.com they believe that there is no broadly recognised domain for the Irish diaspora (dispersed) globally.

This new domain name registry will be aimed at the millions of Irish people not only in Ireland but also abroad which have been estimated as being as high as 70 million. Dot Irish LLC is hoping that the .irish domain will serve as a banner for all of the Irish people, organisations and businesses around the world strengthening the future of the Irish cultural identity across the globe.

Although not confirmed yet .irish domains may be available as soon as 2015.
