Content Management System

Last Updated

If you’ve been talking to a website design company chances are they’ve mentioned CMS a few times. But what exactly is a CMS?

CMS stands for Content Management System. Sometimes, people refer to them as ECMS or Enterprise Content Management Systems.

What is a content management system?

A content management system is a (usually) web-based application that enables logged-in users to manage or edit a website or intranet site. Websites are usually built on a CMS because they are user-friendly (you don’t need to know code to use them) and they allow multiple users to have different permission/access levels to the site. The functionality available to users depends on the CMS used.

At Ireland Website Design, we use Joomla, WordPress, Magento, Eonic, and Drupal. There are hundreds of CMS options out there, from the widely popular Joomla and WordPress to the custom-made solutions unique to an individual organization.

What does a CMS do?

The main purpose of a content management system for a website is to enable a company’s employees to manage the website themselves. This includes creating/editing/deleting/reporting/collaborating on pages, articles, galleries, blogs, online shops, events, and everything in between.

A CMS is a great recipe for building a website, however, a website’s success requires a lot more ingredients. You’ll need a modern set of designs, a skilled developer, hours of content creation, search engine optimization, and ongoing online marketing.
